DRINK OF THE WEEK

Blue Agave’s Coconut Ginger Mojito

Santa Barbara News Press

Leon Stamatis greets us when we make a late-night, early-in-the-week visit to Blue Agave. To come here at this time is unlike our usual visits, which find the two story bar and restaurant packed with all manner of (single) people, shoulder-to-shoulder, glass-to-glass. Instead we get the full lebensraum treatment at the empty bar, where Stamatis has already got three drinks in mind for us to try.

The first was their duly popular Pasión del Diablo, which comes with a chili pepper garnish. The drink is made from their chili-infused vodka, although Stamatis is cagey about what vodka they use. (Him: “It’s our house vodka.” Me: “Which is…?” Him: “…a good vodka.” Me: “Yeah, but…which one?” Him: “I…can’t tell you.” Me: “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM???”) (Note: That last line didn’t happen.)

The vodka By itself is a kick in the throat with capsaicin boots. The drink tempers it with mango puree and complicates it with lime juice and lemongrass syrup. Good stuff. (And duly noted By at least one other patron at the bar, who orders one to sate her curiosity.)

Continuing on, we try the very popular Coconut Ginger Mojito. It’s a tall drink. Stamatis makes hundreds of these a night and, he says, it’s the most complicated to make. Most mojitos try to keep a clear head and stay refreshing through its mix of rum and other flavors. This cocktail goes right ahead and uses coconut puree. Without its mint and ice, it would look like a glass of milk. Into this Stamatis goes two rums (Malibu, of course, and Captain Morgan), a ginger mixer called Elixir G and brown sugar. The drink delivers on its title; its only fault is that it’s hard to see how close you are to finished. There’s so much foam, mint and ice left over you might think there’s something left to drink.

And By the time we had finished ours, five women at the bar had ordered the drink for themselves. Are we tastemakers? No, they chastised us, it was their favorite cocktail already. Take note, however — this isn’t on the menu. They haven’t had to add it.

The weekly special is the Ginger Mint Margarita, made with Hornitos, triple sec, lime juice and that Elixir G again. This time, the ginger is hidden, and the cocktail is a serviceable margarita.

Instead, we preferred the Pineapple Adrift, which Stamatis says he brought back from holiday. It’s a simple mix of the pineapple-flavored Skyy Infusions vodka and DeKuyper’s Tropical Pineapple, topped with a float of that chili vodka. It’s clear and refreshing and flavorful. But because of its unique taste and our wannabe tastemaker status, we’re going to go with the mojito. It’s our Drink of the Week.

Don’t drink and trap!

I’m not sure if there’s a warning on the traps or not but the other night after a night on the town I decided I was sick of living with rodents and that was there last night partying at my place. Well, we’re all heroes when we’re a little tipsy I guess, right? After a 2am snack in the kitchen I grabbed what was left of the cheese in the Fridge. By the way, cheese apparently doesn’t appeal to rats. Who knew!? I got one trap set up with a little fidgeting right in line with some rat turds I found in the laundry room. On the second one I didn’t even get the thing close to the ground before I heard an impressively loud snap as I looked down and noticed my thumb and index finger were inside the trap. Luckily for the booze I didn’t feel a thing but noticed my fingers had a bright white-ish blue line straight across them. They still hurt, but I’ll make it through. Learn from my drunken rat rage and wait ’til the next day. I didn’t catch anything with my 1 successful trap anyhow.

Developing websites for the iPad

As I posted back about six months ago, Adam Brown hired us to create an online portfolio for his world-class photography. He specifically wanted it to be in Flash as we accommodated. Spring forward six months as apple has re-written the future of interactive websites excluding Adobe Flash, Adam asked us to make his site iOS friendly. This was a rather difficult task because of the design of his site. The portfolio is a horizontally scrolling gallery behind a circular mask. With touch-screen mouseless devices a scrollbar doesn’t do much good. So, we needed to figure out how to make it feel natural on the iPad which I think we did a great job of. Have a look at www.adambrownphotography.com on your iPad or iPhone. I think you’ll be impressed.

My First Organic Garden

Well, after 28 years I finally got my first organic garden in with the help of my roomate. We tilled the ground by hand, built a 12′x5′ raised garden out of 2×10 boards, and filled it with some nice soil and organic compost from our local organic garden store in Santa Barbara. I’m by no means a professional at this but I’m having fun learning and hope to eat the rewards sooner than later. I’ll post an update when things get growing pretty nicely. I’ve got a variety of different lettuces, peppers, cucumbers, carrots and squash. Here’s a few preliminary pics, sorry they’re just off my iphone. My next set of pics will be better, I promise.

Sorry, I didn’t get any pics of the organic compost I used.

Logo Evolution for Tempest Telecom

Tempest Telecom hired SB Catalyst to rebrand their company. They were basically looking for help looking the part, as they build and maintain huge telecomunications infrastructure networks for companies like at&t, verizon, and cox. We just wrapped up their logo evolution which is worlds better than what they have been previously using. Up next we’ll be creating a new web presence for them. Stay tuned.

Also, hot off the press is their new slogan: Tempest Telecom Solutions: Infrastructure without boundaries.

New WordPress Site Launched!

Well, I just launched a new wordpress site for John over at the garage in Goleta. I’m really happy with the way the theme turned out. It wasn’t my first concept for the site, but he was looking for something that looked really old school. So I threw in some old posters a cola cap, and an old ad for Piggly Wiggly. Of course I couldn’t display brand names, but you can still get the feel for what’s going on here.

Anyhow, if you’re in the market for a new mechanic, in need of an alignment, or just looking to save a few bucks. I highly recommend checking out The Garage down in Goleta. John’s got about 20 years of experience with working on domestic and foreign cars and actually has his own race team. Speaking of which, I’ve been told that I’ll get pit passes to the next race! Laguna Seca!? I hope so! If you’re reading this John, I’m really excited about going with you. :)

You can find John’s site at www.thegaragesb.com

Website for Adam Brown Photography

Adam Brown, a reputable photographer in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and New York City came to me to help him out with his online portfolio site. He was specific with what he was looking for and wanted it to stay similar to the site he had previously. However, he needed much more functionality and a special touch to make it look current and help him compete in a very competitive industry. We created a content management system for his photography portfolio which enables him to easily add, edit, delete, and reorder all of the images in his galleries. He also has the ability to edit all of the text in the site with a simple easy to use Content Management System that automatically updates the flash galleries. The whole thing is XML driven which means that the flash files are controlled externally making the site run smoothly.

I invite you to check out his website at www.adambrownphotography.com. I’m proud to say that Adam is extremely pleased with the end result.

Update on my allergies

As it turns out, I think that the Fires and smoke in the air were just contributing to my ill feeling. As the fires came and went, my allergies still kicked in. I was getting really frustrated and was trying everything. I started thinking that maybe it was a food allergy that I had and started the process of elimation.

I tried eliminating things that I’ve heard that people I knew were allergic to, like eggs, milk, peanuts, etc. Nothing seemed to work though. Then one morning, I woke up feeling good for a change and thought about my diet as I cooked breakfast for myself. During that week I had eliminated milk from my diet which meant I wasn’t eating my typical huge bowl of cereal every morning which I kind of missed. Anyhow, I sat down to the table and ate my whole grain wheat bagel and banana. Then it struck me about 5 minutes after finishing, I had the worst asthma attack I’d ever had. I ran for my rescue inhaler and had seemingly figured out my allergies to be wheat related since all I ate was a wheat bagel and a banana. I couldn’t imagine the banana doing much damage. I remembered that I used to have an employee who worked for me a couple years back that had celiac disease, which meant that she couldn’t get anywhere near gluten. From my research I found out that gluten is one of the proteins found in wheat. So, I started doing a little more research on this whole gluten thing and got introduced to a whole new world. Apparently it’s very common to be intolerant or allergic to gluten. Both terms are completely different by the way. Intolerant means that you get sick when you eat it, and an allergic reaction gluten is totally different. Both of these conditions can later lead to celiac disease along with other complications if ignored.

It turns out that one of my good friends here in Santa Barbara is allergic to gluten and turned me on to a slew of information. Ryan Swink of Swink Chiropractic is his name and here’s his free plug for his website: www.swinkchiropractic.com He sent me this link to a doctor in Texas that specializes in this type of disorder and I learned a ton of information from his site. Another free plug: http://towncenterwellness.com/resources-products/gluten-free/

So, I’ve now been gluten-free for about 6 weeks and I feel like a different person. I have way more energy, I feel better, and I have a more positive outlook generally speaking. I should mention that I have not gotten any recommendations from doctors and have not been diagnosed with a gluten allergy. This could all be coincidence, but for now, I feel good and I’m loving it. So, I’ll keep it going and am not too worried about not drinking beer or eating bread. I could really care less.
