Pepto for dogs?

Can you give pepto to your dog? Some say don’t do it, some say no problem, but I had no choice and didn’t have any problems from it. I had to this past weekend while down in Long Beach at the Grand Prix. We had to bring the dogs with us for the weekend because of the lack of a dog sitter. Stupid me, decided to switch the dogs’ food to a new brand a couple days before we left and it turned their stomachs pretty bad. After a little research on the world wide web of internets, I found out that some people are giving anti-diarrheal to their dogs. I just mixed it up with some plain yogurt and it went right down. Yum! neon-pink yogurt.

Update on my allergies

As it turns out, I think that the Fires and smoke in the air were just contributing to my ill feeling. As the fires came and went, my allergies still kicked in. I was getting really frustrated and was trying everything. I started thinking that maybe it was a food allergy that I had and started the process of elimation.

I tried eliminating things that I’ve heard that people I knew were allergic to, like eggs, milk, peanuts, etc. Nothing seemed to work though. Then one morning, I woke up feeling good for a change and thought about my diet as I cooked breakfast for myself. During that week I had eliminated milk from my diet which meant I wasn’t eating my typical huge bowl of cereal every morning which I kind of missed. Anyhow, I sat down to the table and ate my whole grain wheat bagel and banana. Then it struck me about 5 minutes after finishing, I had the worst asthma attack I’d ever had. I ran for my rescue inhaler and had seemingly figured out my allergies to be wheat related since all I ate was a wheat bagel and a banana. I couldn’t imagine the banana doing much damage. I remembered that I used to have an employee who worked for me a couple years back that had celiac disease, which meant that she couldn’t get anywhere near gluten. From my research I found out that gluten is one of the proteins found in wheat. So, I started doing a little more research on this whole gluten thing and got introduced to a whole new world. Apparently it’s very common to be intolerant or allergic to gluten. Both terms are completely different by the way. Intolerant means that you get sick when you eat it, and an allergic reaction gluten is totally different. Both of these conditions can later lead to celiac disease along with other complications if ignored.

It turns out that one of my good friends here in Santa Barbara is allergic to gluten and turned me on to a slew of information. Ryan Swink of Swink Chiropractic is his name and here’s his free plug for his website: www.swinkchiropractic.com He sent me this link to a doctor in Texas that specializes in this type of disorder and I learned a ton of information from his site. Another free plug: http://towncenterwellness.com/resources-products/gluten-free/

So, I’ve now been gluten-free for about 6 weeks and I feel like a different person. I have way more energy, I feel better, and I have a more positive outlook generally speaking. I should mention that I have not gotten any recommendations from doctors and have not been diagnosed with a gluten allergy. This could all be coincidence, but for now, I feel good and I’m loving it. So, I’ll keep it going and am not too worried about not drinking beer or eating bread. I could really care less.

Can Allergies kill you?

Well, after my experiences in the past 4 weeks I’d have to go with yes. When we got the smoke in Santa Barbara from the fire up in Santa Maria I started coughing a little bit, but I didn’t think much of it. A week later I was still coughing and it seemed to get a little worse. Then, the LA fire hit and we were getting smoke from that too. The air quality was horrible, and I was getting SICK.

I figured that I had developed some sort of respiratory infection, so I put myself on an antibiotic to kill the infection. That cleaned things up a little bit which indicates that I did have a minor infection, but I was getting worse daily. At this point, I’m coughing, sneezing, choking, and getting asthma attacks. So, I went to urgent care and saw a doctor. He thought that I had some sort of infection as well, so he upped my dosage of antibiotics and sent me on my way. I thought to myself that this was a little weird since I had already been on the antibiotics and they didn’t do much. But what do I know? So, I tried that for a week and got considerably worse.

Doctor visit number two. “Hey doc, I’m back and I’m getting worse. The antibiotics aren’t doing the trick.” Since the high dosage of antibiotics didn’t work, that completely rules out an infection. He then diagnoses me with Allergies that are triggering my Asthma. Which I hadn’t had since I was a kid. He put me on a slew of different meds including steroids, inhalers, antihistamines, and anti-inflamatories. I was feeling up and down for a couple days and I had bought tickets for the West Beach Music Festival and didn’t want to miss it. So, I went Friday night and had a great time. Got to see Donovan Frankenreiter (amazing), The Aggrolites, Ozomatli, Steel Pulse, and the end of Bassnectar act.

The next day I woke up and all was normal for a couple hours until I got a serious Asthma attack. I couldn’t breathe at all. So, I got myself calmed down and went back to the doctor. I guess he was concerned that I may have gotten some fluids in to my lungs so they took some x-rays of my chest, but everything looked normal. He gave me a rescue inhaler and switched up my meds a little bit and talked to me for a while about Asthma, Allergies and Drugs so that I could understand what was going on. That’s now a few days ago and I’m feeling pretty good. I’m down to taking just 2 meds and I seem to be on my way to 100% soon. To be honest, I was pretty scared for a little while.
